John Singletons Family To Take Him Off Life Support Following Stroke

Boyz n the Hood director John Singleton will be taken off life support later today. His family made the difficult announcement earlier after inaccurate reports of his death surfaced.

“It is with heavy hearts we announce that our beloved son, father, and friend, John Daniel Singleton will be taken off life support today. This was an agonizing decision, one that our family made, over a number of days, with the careful counsel of John’s doctors,” began the statement released by the Singleton family.

Monday morning reports surfaced that the 51-year-old had died following a stroke he suffered almost two weeks ago. However, Singleton’s publicist quickly shut down those claims sharing the producer was sadly still in a coma.

It was not the first time there had been conflicting reports regarding his condition. Last week his mother Shelia Ward said her son was in a coma in papers she filed to be his conservator. However, his daughter Cleopatra said her grandmother was lying, and her father was in ICU. She also expressed the family was hopeful he would be moved out of ICU within days.

“We are grateful to his fans, friends, and colleagues for the outpour of love and prayers during this incredibly difficult time. We want to thank all the doctors at Cedars Sinai for the impeccable care he received,” concluded the message.

Along with sharing the devastating news, John Singleton will be removed from life support today, his family revealed he “quietly struggled with hypertension and high blood pressure.” In the statement, the Singleton family encouraged all of his fans to visit Heart.org to learn about any symptoms of either condition.

Singleton’s family also praised the work he accomplished in Hollywood. He was a ground-breaking director and his films not only changed the game in the business for African American’s, but it also opened doors to a world utterly different from the one he grew up in. He loved finding new and brilliant talent to showcase in his various projects, being in one of Singleton’s movies was considered career-making roles.

In his personal life, his family described him as a loving father to seven children, brother, and son. He was all about higher education, black culture, old school music and the power of film.
